"From the first time I saw the precast terrazzo Penrose floor pattern on the plans, until a few days into the installation by American Stone Company, I was skeptical as to how it would turn out. The preplanning and coordination on the part of American Stone Company paid off as this complicated installation turned out to be a great success. The precast terrazzo Penrose floor is considered by many of the users to be the showpiece of these elaborate buildings. The standard thin-set terrazzo in the other areas of the buildings also turned out great.    Brad Wendler - Vaughn Construction

Construction of the two Physics and Astronomy buildings, which are joined by a crosswalk, began in 2006 constructed by Vaughn Construction Company.  Together they provide more than 197,000 square feet of floor space. Included within the space are laboratories, offices, lounges, lecture halls and an auditorium. The Mitchell Physics Buildings provide a permanent home for consolidated physics teaching and research activities.

The Foucault pendulum is positioned and admired as a sculpture located in the center of the "Penrose" designed terrazzo installation. The project was a unique challenge that those at American Stone undertook with enthusiasm. The architect commissioned by the Mitchell's to design this project is the world renowned Michael Graves and Associates. These two buildings are LEED Certified.
